How I Used The Thinking SkillFor my first project I looked at how factories and the fashion industry work in the context of other countries with different standards and cultures. I also learned how to sew and created multiple pieces. I learned how to sew in the context of recycling and up-cycling fabric.

What is fast fashion?Fast fashion is the mass production of low quality clothing. The fast fashion industry allows consumers buy trendy clothing for low prices, but it is often at the expense of textiles workers in developing countries.

Global Studies (S.S)
Originally I wanted to focus on the environmental impact fast fashion has on the environment, but my project shifted more to the fast fashion industry's impact on textile workers. I did my research with a book called Slave to Fashion, by Safia Minney.
Summary:
In the book Slave To Fashion, Safia Minney explains some countries like the U.K and U.S laws and act that have been implements to prevent "modern slavery". Throughout the book she interviewing initiatives, organizations, and non-profits to help explain what they do and the finical situation of textile workers, and the working conditions. She develops these ideas further by interviewing multiple textile workers.
Book Annotation:
Above are a few of the annotations I made while reading the book. This was my primary source of research about the fast fashion industry. In total there were roughly 4-5 pages worth of annotations.
Above are the organize book annotations. In order show an understanding of my research I had to organize it in some way. I chose to organize my notes by my four Social Studies standards: Income, Profit, and wealth, Evaluating International Trade in Foreign Countries, How International Relationships Work, and Interaction Between People and Environment. I did this to ensure I hit all my standards.
Mind Map:
Above is the finished mind map. It is organized by the four social studies standards. The sub topics are in orange, sub-sub topics are in green, and red is definitions.

In order to learn how to sew I had used the instructions for the Brother sewing machine and watched tutorials. Some things I learn through the tutorials include how to tread a sewing machine, how to load a bobbin, and how to spin/put thread on a bobbin.
In order to get used to the machine I used fabric scraps. Once I was confident in the machine I began to plan for the scrunchies. I learned how sew scrunchies by watching several different tutorials. After sewing the first tie-dye scrunchie I began to adjust the measurements with the next two versions. |
After I was satisfied with my scrunchies I began researching tutorials on how to design a "bo-ho" bag. I then drafted measurements and unsed scrap pieces of canvas to cut the pieces.
I wanted pockets on my design so I had to do additional research on how to measure and sew the pockets. After having a bag successfully sewn together, I realized there were some improvements I could make. One improvement cutting the straps off, hemming them, and reattaching them to the bag. |
